I like to stray from the crowd, of what is typically referred to as ‘normal’, or ‘typical. In the past, and by the photography industry, it has been suggested and embedded into me that I follow the norm, that I pick one style and one style only. I cannot label myself as one thing or another, I cannot squish myself into a box titled ‘Expectations’. What kind of life would I lead, if I followed those commands or requests, and wasn’t my true self?
To be truly happy in this life, you must follow your gut instinct. If you want to take that daring picture, take the damn picture. If you want to dabble in every type of photography, you do that, just as long as you’re HAPPY. If you want to dye your hair purple, dye your damn hair purple. If you want to wear a slinky outfit, wear the damn outfit. Do everything for yourself. I refuse to abide the rules, or what is expected of me. To be original, you must take risks. And that is what I did with this photo. I decided to do something, I decided to combine two things I love; Colour & Monochrome. I didn’t even question it, I just went with my creative flow. (This photo was captured at the recent event held by Lily’s Jewellery & Accessories, in which I was invited to attend with my camera in tow. A fantastic night. To read more about it, check my previous posts.)
Being original is my only aim in my photography journey. Yes, I am no expert. And yes I do not hold a certificate in this field, but I damn well try my best to be included in this industry, let alone acknowledged so why should a piece of paper define my worth, or define my capability? To others it is most important, but to me, it would just force me into that Expectations Box, encouraging me to pick one thing I’m good at. I like to think I’m good at a lot of things, so why should I have to choose just one? Why can’t I be different. (Some of you might not agree, but hey, you’re entitled to your opinion.) What If my sole purpose as a freelance photographer, is to defeat everyone’s expectations, and to prove that no matter who you are or where you’re from, as long as you own some sort of camera, you’re worthy of respect. I claim to be a Portrait & Landscape Photographer, and within this title, there are so many possibilities.
So, with that, I shall conclude another passionate rant (another rambling post, more like), and bid you a fabulous day.
